Since the 2016 US elections the threat of cybercrime has surfaced to the mainstream, just last week the US, UK and the Netherlands accused Russia of playing a role in a series of cyber-plots. Starting cyber safe requires cyber safety awareness.

requires

awareness.

Before you start thinking cybercrime only happens between countries or covert operations, think again. Cybercriminals are getting bolder and regular people are feeling the affects, last year saw 6.09 million Australians fall victim to cybercrime.

Stay Smart Online Week aims to spread awareness of this threat and team Mobi is behind efforts to reverse the threat of cybercrime.

Here are some steps you can take to stay cyber-safe:

1.PASSWORDS

Passwords are your first line of defence against cybercriminals. Make sure to regularly update them and don’t choose something that can be guessed easily – so no pet names or your favourite football team. Of course it can be difficult to remember new passwords for all your web accounts, that’s why here at Mobiddiction we’re huge fans of 1Password, which manages your passwords over a number of accounts. Our tech guru Iain also recommended enabling 2FA (2-factor authentication).

2. PHISHING

Phishing scams are fake messages that try to trick you into giving out your personal details. Be careful of anyone asking for details such as DOB or bank account etc. Spam emails are also becoming harder to identify, so take extra caution. If you receive a suspicious message, do not click on any links or open any attachments.

3. UPDATES

Yes we know it can be a drag, but keeping your software up-to-date is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself online. These updates add new features, install bug fixes and fix security holes that could let cybercriminals in. Do not install third party software, unless you are absolutely sure it’s fine and beware of camera hacks. Some programs can actually install applications that can hack into your laptop camera etc.

4. PUBLIC WI-FI

Be wary when using public Wi-Fi, without the right protection, cybercriminals could see your information. So be wary when using public wifi and doing any online banking, online shopping or sending sensitive information. And we know it’s tempting and saves time, but remember not to store passwords or logins in any place where can be easily accessed.
